Lunch at St Luke's
Where? Liverpool, Merseyside
When? 1 April 2008
What's it about? St Luke's is a deconsecrated church in central Liverpool. It is a grade II listed building which was completely gutted during the 1941 Liverpool Blitz, leaving the church a unique outdoor space, as only its four beautiful exterior walls remain. The church has stood unused and empty for over 60 years. Lunch at St Luke's wishes to renovate this disused urban wasteland, creating an inner city green space, which can then be used to host various arts events and environmental activities, for the benefit of local residents. We have already commissioned the Youth Offending Team to plant wild flowers and rid the interior of rubble etc, but we are limited as to further environmentally friendly improvements until this vital resurfacing work is complete. Volunteers are an indispensable part of the project; their valuable support ranges from helping our workers with all office based tasks, to on-site assistance with general maintenance, event preparation, stewarding etc. We have vacancies in all areas for various skills and offer as much help and support to our volunteers, in return for their much appreciated hard work and dedication.

Year 4 Gardeners Group
Where? Nottingham, Nottinghamshire
When? 1 April 2008
What's it about? I am starting a gardening club with 6, year 4 students (age 8/9 years). The idea is to brighten up the school grounds by planting seeds and plants in containers and tubs as well as in the small amount of garden the school has. I want the children to grow both vegetables and flowers. The project will encourage the children to take an interest and pride in their environment, as well as learning how plants grow and what their needs are. Planting vegetables will learn them that we can grow our own food and keep their interest in the project. A local gardening expert has offered to come in and show the children some vegetables that we can grow in containers.

What's it about? The Children of ysgol y Ddwylan are deeply committed to improving their environment and that of their community. They are currently involved in a range of activities to this end all under the title of ECOSCHOOL. They have attained the coveted green flag status for their sustained efforts. They recycle materials within the class room and compost waste materials at home and school. This compost being used in their garden areas. The pupils are also engaged in a project to make their town, Newcastle Emlyn, the first Plastic Bag free town in Wales. They have designed an alternative re useable bag for use in our town which is in the process of production now. The children have been involved with a safe walking to school route which is to be officially opened at the end of the month.; This particular part of the project is about improving the surroundings of the school with sustainable and natural play and wildlife friendly resources. The children are learning about natural materials have started to weave a willow dome. They are wanting to make a willow tunnel to accompany the dome and create an exciting and lasting resource for future pupils.; The volunteers will learn how to plan, position and lay out a willow project. They will learn the practical skills of how to plant, tie and weave willow tunnelling and will work with each other on a project that will be completed in a day. The participants (children, parents, friends, Teachers) will have the opportunity to work across the age groups and abilities in a co operative way that we hope will be both satisfying and educational. The holistic approach which the children of Ysgol y Ddwylan have taken to the problems of health, environment and the future of their community is truly inspiring .I hope you feel able to support their continuing work.
