Sellincourts Spring Clean and garden Makeover

What's it about? Pupils, parents and friends of this diverse community school will work together to enhance the outdoor space. The large tarmac-ed area will be swept, scrubbed and litter picked where necessary. Precious green spaces-mostly raised beds and pots will be weeded, pruned and planted further. Particular attention will focus on a raised bed at the main school entrance. We hope to make an immediate visual improvement to the school environment and foster an interest in the outdoors.

Creating New Habitats for Butterflies and Moths
Where? Sherborne, Dorset

What's it about? Alners Gorse Butterfly Reserve includes a conifer plantation put in over the last 50 years. We plan to remove these conifers over the next few years, but initially we aim to open up a wide glade to link two grassland areas which are already good habitats for threatened species like the Marsh Fritillary. We are also using the tree-trunks to create a log cabin as a field shelter for the ponies which graze the reserve. Our volunteers will be involved in cutting and processing the unwanted conifer trees and shaping suitable ones for the log cabin. We will provide soup and baked potatoes on the bonfire.

Community Nest Box Scheme

What's it about? Volunteers will design, measure and cut to size 6" x 1" wood to make a number of nesting boxes, both open-fronted and hole nest boxes. This will involve accurate measuring, cutting the lengths of 6" x 1" wood to required sizes for the various boxes and then building up the boxes and erecting them in the village wildlife havens and community gardens where desirable.

Clean Sweep Champs

What's it about? We will clear and clean specific areas of Halstead (i.e. around 2xprimary schools and 1xsenior school and 1xinfil site) litter picking and tidying in conjunction with Braintree District Council's Community Champions and Spring Clean Week.
