BEAT THE BRACKEN

When? 21 May 2008
What's it about? The Society Local Nature Reserve, Slader's Leigh, is being over-run with bracken & meadowsweet - last year we started a 5 year plan to eradicate both invasive species so that the orchids, for which the Reserve is famous, could thrive. This means pulling the small plants of both species at least every 3 weeks, a labour intensive business. Meadowsweet is sometimes eaten by certain breeds of sheep, we can get some rams onto the Reserve once we have cleared a space in a boundary hedge, put in a fence with a gate as access. This work party will be the first of the growing season, the volunteers helped on several days last year also.
