Bog Garden Project In The Forest Area Of Our School Grounds

What's it about? We would like to create a bog garden in our forest area at the rear of the school. We intend to line a natural dip in the ground with pond liner (spiked with holes to let standing water drain slightly) and plant bog-loving plants within it. The volunteers will clear the area, line the base with pond liner and plant the bog garden.

Communal Floral Display: Global Warming

What's it about? A large wooden planter will be planted in the town square by volunteers. The theme of this year's communal planting is global warming and climate change. What's it about? The 6 children who attend the autism Nursery will plant a variety of seeds and bulbs in to pots. We will take photos of the children while doing this and will regularly encourage the children to check on the plants and seeds progress. We feel sure that the children will enjoy this as it will be very active and multi-sensory. We will display our plans for the children's parents and give them copies of photos of their child planting. We would then encourage the children to talk about the planting and to draw what they think will grow.

Saltways Gardening Project

What's it about? We have a total of 24 residents who each have their own garden plots here at Saltways; they vary in size with the largest measuring approximately five feet by eight feet. Key Tasks: These are the most important tasks that we need help with: - 1) To clear away any dead leaves, weeds, dead plants and litter from each of our resident’s garden plots. - 2) To prune any existing plants as necessary in each pl. - 3) To dead head any plants that require attention. - 4) To turn over the soil in each plot, and dig in compost as necessity. - 5) To plant and water in any plants that have been provided for each pl. - 6) To clear away all debris created as a result of the above activity. Phoenix Sculpture Trail

What's it about? The project involves volunteers designing and carving a sculptural seat for visitors at the country park. The young volunteers (aged 12 to 18) will work with a local artist to learn wood carving shells in order to make the seat which replaces a vandalised seat. The new seat will form part of the Phoenix Sculpture Trail around this local nature reserve. This is an 8 day project with volunteers at the Country Park, and will provide visitors with a regenerated seating area in this great countryside setting. The wood used to make the seat will be recycled beech timber which will be collected from natural windfall which would otherwise be disposed of in a land fill site.

Next Stop Rosslyn Castle Train Station

What's it about? Rosslyn Castle station picnic site is within the Penicuik to Dalkeith Walkway. A 9.5 mile linear route used by walkers, cyclists and horse riders. The route is a former railway line and is an important resource for Mid-Lothian. Volunteers from 'Friends of Roslin Glen' will help clear up the platform areas of vegetation and repaint the original castle station sign. Some pathwork improvement work will also be undertaken to make access easier.
