Golcar Lily Day
Where? Huddersfield, West Yorkshire
When? 10 May 2008
What's it about? Golcar Lily Day is a day of celebration of our village. During the year the volunteers work hard to improve the environment of the Golcar area. We clean the village centre of rubbish and plant bulbs and spring flowers. Last year the old ginnels were identified and cleared. This is and on-going project - in fact it could last a life time. We then established and mapped a ginnel trail and people can enjoy a walk around the old parts of Golcar. This year we are identifying the old wells of the area. Some of these have already disappeared due to housing development and we can only mark where they were. Others still exist and we are mapping them and encouraging people to walk to see them. We would like to keep them from being lost and we believe that marking them and encouraging people to visit would be a good way to protect them. On Golcar Lily Day itself we want people to come out to walk around their village enjoying it at its best. A lot of our work just needs committed and energetic volunteers but there are costs for plants and tools. Any support would be welcome and it would be particularly good to know that the value of our work is acknowledged.
