Opening The Wildlife Door To The Rest of The World.
Where? Near Dunhamstead
When? 22 March 2009
What's it about? Trench Wood (a SSSI)is being returned to an Ancient Woodland by careful management of the current trees and vegetation. Part of the site was planted up as a commercial crop of white woods for paint brushes and broom heads etc and is now being manage as a PAWS wood (Plantation on an Ancient Woodland Site). The wood is a key local site for its wildlife diversity and the task for the day is to open up an area of previously cut and new woodland to create an opening from the outside edge of the wood to the srubby central area favored by visiting summer migrant birds, butterflies and beautiful wild plants. The creation of this access corridor is important to allow the insects, butterflies and birds access into the rides and scrub of the wood through areas warmed and protected from the wind are encouraged to grow through the sun light. The access route will encourage many species including bats into the heart of the wood and its internal network of rides and scrubby areas. The day will also include the creation of a habitat woodpile designed specifically to encourage invertabrates through the process of decaying wood thus providing this priceless habitat within an area denuded of old trees and timber by previous management regimes and forestry operations.
