Wild Watervoles!
Where? Arundel to Pulborough
When? 29 July 2009
What's it about? There are currently two of us undertaking surveys of the Arun Valley in Sussex to look at water vole dispersal along the drainage ditches in the area, this is completed on a voluntary basis by us and to drive the project forward we are trying to arrange a volunteer day. Volunteers will be trained on water vole signs and the importance of this rapidly declining species. Then they take part in surveys along the valley floor recording signs in accordance with the watervole handbook 2nd edition. Each and every ditch within this 17km stretch must be surveyed in order to obtain the necessary background data required to expand the project. Each ditch is also surveyed for habitat quality and which will be used by Sussex Wildlife Trust to monitor any changes in habitat over time. Where possible the volunteers are also asked to make a note of other species which they observe and this information is passed to the biodiversity records office, species seen incclude barn owl, slow worms and a grass snake, kestrels, buzzards and various butterfly species. Volunteers will walk with a guide and point survey the central 100m of each ditch. 5 points for each ditch with 20m spacing will be completed. Latrines (indicating breeding females) will be GPS recorded for inputting onto GIS maps. Habitat surveys to include ditch vegetation, water depth, bank structure and damage by grazing animals where appropriate. All other water vole signs (burrows, feeding signs etc) to be recorded along with signs of predators (dung, tracks, sightings etc) with a special focus on Mink. This information is passed to SWT and the hope is to continue these surveys annually to monitor populations in this area.

What's it about? In the past year parents at the school have established a school grounds group with the aim of transforming a disused tarmac play area into a thriving wildlife garden and outdoor classroom. As part of the project, we would like to build raised beds in which to grow vegetables with the children, to help them to learn about the life cycle of plants, where food comes from, sustainable agriculture and organic gardening. If given funding by you, we would use it to purchase tools such as trowels, spades and forks for the children.
