New Homes for Homeless Bats
Where? Lowestoft
When? 3 July 2008
What's it about? We wish to purchase and erect into the trees at Bonds Meadow, bat boxes and blue tit boxes. Hedgehog boxes will also be bought and suitable locations found for installation. We intend to buy the boxes from a local group of disabled craftsmen who call themselves 'Sold' This is Special Objectives for the Local Disabled. We have in the past purchased from them and their work is of the highest quality. We wish to purchase a variety of boxes to the £50 limit and volunteers will collect and site the boxes.

Restoration of Ancient and Beautiful Hedgerows

What's it about? We wish to fill in gaps in the existing hedgerows with traditional hedgerow trees such as hawthorn, blackthorn, dogrose, hornbeam and holly.

What's it about? Our aim is to increase wildlife activity in the open space and playground by putting up bird and bat boxes. Volunteers will be asked to assist in securing the boxes in trees and to lay cuttings of hedges underneath shrub borders to create hiding spaces for animals.

A New Start In A Green Corner

What's it about? We will be working with volunteers to clear an area of the garden and plant this up with shrubs and flowers. This will be in the garden area that service users who live at Sanctuary Supported Housing use. This area is much in need of rejuvenation and the service users who volunteer will gain experience of working as a team as well as basic gardening skills.

Operation Mini-pond
Where? Felixstowe
When? 23 June 2008
What's it about? Pupils and a volunteer adult are reclaiming a neglected area of the school grounds to recreate a garden which can be used by the whole school community at all times of the year.We have started with the first section and developed a vegetable and herb garden. This Action Earth project will recycle an old water play tray for use as a mini pond. We will need to dig a hole to settle tray and stand as far into the ground as possible and use the dug out earth to build access banks around the sides for wild life to colonise the habitat. Then line the tray and plant if we are awarded a grant.

Working On The Wild Side
Where? Kedington
When? 21 June 2008
What's it about? Converting part of the school playing field into a wild area, volunteers will dig a boundary ditch to seperate area from playing area. The ditch will be widened and deepened at one point to provide a damp / wet habitat. Volunteers will also remove turf to create bare areas for wild flowers and grasses, a log pile and a stone pile. Removed turf will be used to make a bank at one end.

Pond Life Experience
Where? Lowestoft

What's it about? In conjunction with the Suffolk Wildlife Trust, students and teachers will be emptying and dismantling two ponds within the school grounds, then repairing and replanning the ponds. One pond is particularly large. Other work will involve students building bird boxes and bee hotels for the Suffolk Wildlife Trust and the school's wildlife area (yet to be started). This is a long term project.
