SLADER'S LEIGH - WHO AND WHAT ARE WE?
Where? North Somerset
When? 7 July 2009
What's it about? Since 1986 the Mendip Society has owned a very small meadow along side the Strawberry Line Walk in North Somerset, Slader's Leigh LNR; it has a permissive footpath through it and is very popular with walkers. It has never had any information board of any sort to let visitors know who manages it, or what it is called, and something about the wildlife which can be found there at different times of the year. Slader's Leigh is a particular name in the area and one of the sixth form students of the local school has made a board for us, as his A-Level Design & Technology project. We need to install it in the Nature Reserve, in as, unfortunately, in these days, a vandal proof way as possible.; A 'Green Gym' group, the Weston Woodlanders, has offered to do the job for us as they are used to installing seats and signs in Weston Woods. As they are all unemployed volunteers, we will have to supply a mini bus for their transport.; They will do this on an 'Open Day' we have planned for Slader's Leigh, when local people can come and, with the help of experts in their field, identify and record all the flora and fauna of the nature reserve for the Bristol Record Office. The group will also insert a small gate into a fence line for the passage of sheep from a nearby field for grazing the meadow - a part of the management plan; so visitors will also see volunteering work carried out and be able to learn about the opportunities available locally.;
