Orkney & Shetland Projects

Completed Projects

SNHBelmont Meadow
Where? Unst
When? 18 July 2009
What's it about? This is one part of a larger garden restoration project, which is itself part of a much larger House restoration project. This element is the formation of a natural meadow in the central garden at Belmont, in the island of Unst, Britains northernmost island. We will have a weekend of volunteer work to dig up, split and replant very old daffodils and plant these to reinforce the lines of old daffodils which define the garden paths in this 1775 garden. We will also cut and define grass paths and dig out noxious weeds. The meadow grass will thereafter be managed with an annual cut to allow wild flowers to regenerate and wildlife to find a stopping off point on migration routes.

SNHFoula - the most remote bird garden
Where? ZE2 9PN
When? 13 June 2009
What's it about? We plan to bring the entire community of the remote island of Foula together to enhance the grounds of the Foula community school and hall with large planters for bushes and plants. This centrally situated location will add to the network of small oases of cover for the many local and migrant birds which arrive in our windswept island. The volunteers will build large wooden planters to match the smaller flower ones already in place, and donate soil and locally resilient plants, bushes, and small trees to fill the boxes. Bird nest boxes and feed stations will also be made. The school-children and local rangers and bird-watchers will record the wildlife they see in the bushes.
