'Forget-Me-Not Heritage Collection'
Where? Newark
When? 1 April 2009
What's it about? There is a derelict, grassed area of land at the front of the school, which is going to be completely dug by the children and then planted. The plants come from the 'Forget-Me-Not' family. The area is under some mature trees and so will resemble a dell area. The plants are going to be from a rare plant collection. We are liasing with a local nurseryman who is a collection holder. In order to protect the species of plants for the future we as a school intend to hold the back up collection for the national collection. The children have been involved in selecting the plants, area and the plan of the project. They will be involved in the digging, planting and maintaining of the dell area. As the school is surrounded by a chain link open fence the area can be viewed from the passing road. Therefore visitors to the school and members of the community in the village can also admire the area and benefit from the project visually.

What's it about? We have launched a community garden project to help those less able to garden to enjoy their space, which we will be working on a voluntary basis, we have also acquired an allotment which after an initial clean and dig will be used mainly by our young people.  We hope that through learning how to garden and grow food they will become more responsible about what they eat and how they cook it.  We also hope that through learning these skills they will then become part of the gardening service helping those less able to cultivate their areas and in doing so will become more respectful of their area and the rest of our community.
