Roses are Red, they're good for you.
Where? Edinburgh
When? 23 May 2009
What's it about? We are regenerating our tenement back-green. If we got an award of £50 this would allow us to buy and plant lots of nice roses to make the place look nice, encourage community participation, and discourage dumping of rubbish etc... They would soak up some CO2 as well - not much, but every little helps! We have already cleared all the brambles, planted lots of veg and formed a lawn area, but this would really help to add the final touches and make the place homely and inviting. The more people we can get involved, the better for the environment in terms of education and behaviour. We have grow-your-own workshops too, and if we can get people more interested in them, it's got to be good in the long term, and making the place look hospitable and getting people outside is the first step. Our next workshop should be on 23 May, but we have them regularly.

Potty Allotments
Where? Whitburn
When? 25 June 2009
What's it about? School pupils, parents and interested volunteers will work together to improve the soil in our raised beds in order that in future these can be divided up and offered to pupils to be used for allotments. Soil improving will involve removing weeds and exsting plants, collecting and transporting either manure or soil improver into the school garden (enclosed by 4 walls so access by machine impossible), creating spits and filling in with manure. Areas will then be covered to prevent further weeds appearing during the school holidays, also allowing soil to improve. A second raised bed will be covered and can be worked on at a later date but in the meantime this can be used to create further planting space for fruit and vegetables by allowing pupils to plant in pots on top of the second bed. (potty allotments)
