Prestbury Close Benches
Where? Bury
When? 27 May 2008
What's it about? Within the estate there are a series of flats in a horse-shoe shape with a large green in the centre. In the past benches have been put up at three locations, however these are now in very bad repair and one has had to be taken down due to it being unsafe to use. The residents of these flats are mostly elderly or disabled and they have enjoyed sitting on these benches in the nice weather, socialising with each other. We would like to replace the benches with new ones which will, hopefully, last for longer. Volunteers will help to remove the old benches and prepare the ground for the new benches, plant up small areas around the new benches with bulbs.

Think "Fantastic Plastic"
Where? Nelson
When? 22 March 2008
What's it about? We’re going to recycle materials and use them to develop props for games. We’re reusing plastic saved from landfill to encourage ideas from young paddlers, which we can use and reuse with community groups. As plastics are waterproof, colourful and hardwearing they are ideal to reuse and we aim to inspire creative thinking. The children will learn that, with a bit of thought, readily available materials (which would usually be thrown away like plastic milk cartons, polythene carrier bags and fruit packaging) can be crafted into games equipment. Over the evening, our youth section will try new ideas, discuss different materials which can be used and will be encouraged to adapt or suggest other examples for volunteers to make for future sessions. We want volunteers to register ideas, test games, adapt suggestions and develop worksheet.

TAS Transformation
Where? Nelson
When? 18 June 2008
What's it about? The project will be to turn an overgrown and rubbish filled un-adopted area into a nice place for the community to walk byand be able to sit down. The grant itself will be used for the purpose of purchasing a community bench. The area is beside a stairway that leads into the centre of Brierfield and is used by many members of the pulic on a daily basis. Volunteers made up of existing pupils, ex pupils and local young people who hang out around the school and also the community Cyber Cafe have agreed to get together and improve this area. This will include clearing the rubbish, weeding the area, digging the turf over, planting the area, painting the wall and installing a bench for members of the public to sit. The steps and path are on a slope and most elderly & disabled people who use the steps struggle to walk up the path and steps without stopping. On a regular basis they stop and will talk to pupils from the school which is encouraging a great relationship between young (excluded) pupils and the local community. The bench will enable older & disabled members of the public to sit down and have a rest, will also encourage further cohesion between different groups within the community and will make a very visual difference that can be be maintainedin the long term by pupils at the school. This land is currently unadopted and we have asked both the local council, local shop owners, residents and Neighbourhood Management whether we can adopt this area.
