Clayton Brook Village Hall Garden - Greener Clayton
Where? Clayton Brook, Bamber Bridge
When? 20 July 2009
What's it about? As an officer working for Chorley Council in a community development capacity I am currently working with local residents to develop a community garden which is attached to Clayton Brook Village Hall, Clayton Brook, Bamber Bridge. For the last two years local organisations and residents have, with limited resources, actively pulled together to improve the local village area which for a number of years has suffered from poor investment. The Clayton Brook Village Hall Garden Group was established on 18th May 2009 to develop a project for a fenced off area of flagged paving and large raised planter attached to the Village Hall. The area is sited in the Village centre and is surrounded by the shops that make up the Village. The 'Greener Clayton' project will be made up of a number of parts - herb planting and sensory garden, bench art and flower bed planting. The local primary school, Homestart, the local scout group, volunteers from the local Clayton Brook Community House and the area target group, Clayton Brook Together, have been involved with the design of the garden. There are key volunteers from each group who will act as representatives on the Garden Group. Children and adults from the involved groups and volunteers from the Community House will take an active part in developing the project, planting and maintaining the various beds. Although the overall aim of the project is to improve the aesthetic appearance of the village centre, it also has some undeniable benefits including promoting social interaction, education and healthy eating. Participating groups will benefit from physical activity and help improve the local environment and image of the village, which, for a long while has suffered from poor investment and has been designated as a target area. The development of the garden and local involvement will encourage ‘ownership’ and pride in the village and may ultimately alleviate anti social behaviour and vandalism.

Celebrate “neenwollaH" eve
Where? Earby
When? 30 April 2009
What's it about? Neewollah eve is a cause for celebration for our happy team of young environmentalists. We are holding a backwards Halloween night half a year away from 31 October, where, instead of tricking each other with beetles, bats and spiders, we share the wonderful world of our creepy critters. ; This year, Earby Scout Group are to maintain the local church garden as part of their badge work and this will involve clearing rubbish, debris and plant waste. Instead of disposing of these materials, we will use it to establish a wildlife haven within the garden space. Some materials will be used to make insect houses and we will also put up some bird boxes to replace any shrubs we will be cutting back.; neewollaH will start with a mini-beast hunt to observe the insect’s natural environment. The group will then use this knowledge to establish a corner of the church garden as close as we can to the original habitat and then plant insect friendly flowers nearby. The evening will finish with especially concocted bugsy themed non-alcoholic drinks.; ; Venue : St Peters Church Garden, Riley Street, Earby.
