Charlie.
Where? Penmaenmawr
When? 24 July 2008
What's it about? Charlie, PCEG's oldest volunteer (at ninety) set himself the challenge of designing and constructing unique, purpose-made wooden planters to support PCEG in their bid to transform the drab, neglected Fernbrook car park into an area that is pleasant to visit. Situated in the very centre of the once-thriving, socially disadvanted, quarry village of Penmaenmawr, the entrance to the car park was totally dominated by large, untidy recycling bins that, whilst showing a care for the future of the planet, appeared to give little regard for the actual environment in which they were placed. The car park was litter-strewn, and there was grass, thistles and brambles pushing through the tarmac on all its boundaries. Last summer, Charles built two sets of huge nesting planters. These were transported and strategically positioned at the entrance, filled with compost by volunteers, and planted out by local children. They brought joy to the whole community. This year the project will be finalised. Charlie has made boxes that now hang from each of the six buttresses on the retaining wall that runs the length of the car park. He has made two large planters that have been positioned in front of the grim, utilitarian buildings that house the toilet block and adjacent library. The whole area has been improved beyone belief. But the project, which is a tribute to Charlie's enthusiasm and tenacity, needs to be sustained. Therefore, through liaison with the local youth worker, PCEG will again bridge the generations when all all-age volunteers from the village will: Complete the final permanent planting of the boxes. Clear the boundaries of the site. They will meet at this site on one more occasion. (The youth of the village are being especially targetted)

Hedgehog and Frog Housing Development
Where? Penmaenmawr
When? 31 May 2008
What's it about? We have already built a pond in a quiet corner of the Victorian walled garden that houses our organic allotments. We hope that the frogs and toads that will populate the pond will live off the slugs that currently harass our vegetables. Flintshire Wildlife and Pet Rescue have also promised us two hedgehogs. We now need to turn the area around the pond into a fully functioning wildlife area. The Action Earth Grant will be used to buy wildflower seeds and native shrubs to provide food for the various animals that we hope to encourage.
