Brightening up the grounds!
Where? London
When? 12 May 2009
What's it about? We will buy some new planters for the front of the school and set up a Plant the Plant Day, where volunteers from parents and children will donate plants and time to make the school look nice for the summer. At present there are old unsightly tyres with a few bulbs in which need replacing. The rest of the front of the school is tarmac so planters would make the area much more pleasant for the children. They would also gain a sense of ownership from having chosen and planted the plants themselves which will lead to them respecting the plants and not damaging them.

Our English Country Garden
Where? London
When? 8 June 2009
What's it about? In recent months, our school has begun to take a very keen interest in Green issues relating to our environment. Children are very conscious of how much energy they use and the effects this can have on the environment. My year 3 class have taken this one step further, and we are currently in the process of constructing our own organic garden, which will provide fruit and veg for the school, as well as creating a spot of beauty on the school grounds. So far, we have been relying on the generosity of parents, who have provided us with lots of seeds and pots. One parent has also built a wooden bed for us out of old planks. We have got in touch with the local garage, who have sent over some spare tyres which will make wonderful flower beds, in keeping with the theme of "looking after our environment" and recycling. Therefore, we have all the means for creating a fabulous garden. All that we lack now is soil and fertiliser, which, unfortunately, is likely to be our greatest expense. So far we have planted some seeds in a few of the tyres and our bed is beginning to take shape, but we still have plenty that we would like to do. Chidlren tend to the garden every day, and it has been the focus of a number of art, literacy and science lessons.
