When? 1 June 2009
What's it about? The Fraserburgh Lifeshaper Project is aimed at local people addressing their alcohol and other drug misuse. The 12 week programme works with individuals on becoming alcohol and other drug free and maintaining this lifestyle. As part of their programme this team have chosen to improve the outside space of our existing building, not only for their enjoyment and for that of future teams but primarily to provide some help for the rapidly diminishing bee and butterfly population. They are taking a bare space at the rear of the premises and building an urbane garden that will attract bees and butterflies in order to help increase the population. The volunters will spend a specific amount of time (estimated about 2 hours each per week) designing, costing, sourcing and researching plants and materials for the project. They will then work to build the garden, bringing in plants and earth, containers and planters to enhance the existing small boarders and establish a routine to maintain and water the plants in order to get the garden establishe enough to thrive.

Bulb Planting Bonanza
Where? Gurgedyke, Methlick
When? 25 April 2009
What's it about? We have established a community garden near Methlick in Aberdeenshire, it is used by members of the local community, and also service users of the local day centre who have learning disabilities. Two years ago we planted an area of the garden with daffodil bulbs, these bulbs have now established and have provided a beautiful show this spring. In the middle of this bulb area we have a bird table where two red squirrels have recently taken up residence! The service users and volunteers have therefore spent a lot of time in this area of the garden. We have several areas in the garden including a wildlife promoting area and vegetable and fruit patches. However we would like to extend and vary our bulb area by planting later summer bulbs to vary this area, bulb types would include tulips and lilies. We would have a volunteer day to plant these new bulbs which we would use the grant money for. Our original bulb-planting day was very successful.
