Big Tent Spiral
Where? Falkland
When? 24 April 2009
What's it about? With a SNH Biodiversity Award in 2008, the Big Tent wildflower meadow (in the shape of a spiral) was created providing an educational experience to the many visitors to Big Tent to enjoy, especially the children. This year we would like to enhance this spiral and educational experience by working with volunteers to plant herbs and other vegetable seeds on a section of the spiral not yet developed. This will therefore mean that visitors to the festival site will be able to experience both the smell and taste of the spiral. We hope that the herbs and vegetables will be ready for the festival (25-26 July).
Volunteers will therefore help to dig out the spiral, plant the seeds and help ensure their healthy growth eg there will be a rota for watering the meadow. We hope that pupils from the local primary school will help with the planting. Volunteers will also help to look after the meadow on the festival and let people know what is actually growing. Volunteers will also care for the meadow once the festival is finished for the year.

Creating Bird and Bat Sanctuaries on Falkland Estate
Where? Falkland
When? 25 July 2009
What's it about? We would like CVS Action Earth to support wildlife in two areas of Falkland Estate where we are working on exciting projects. In the first area young volunteers are involved in a project to create rejuvenate a disused mill pond on Falkland Estate. In the second project we have been working with mainly older volunteers on the Coalpit Den - this is an area whose biodiversity has suffered in past years through inappropriate planting. We are re-establishing the natural habitat and there are clear signs through our surveys that wildlife is returning. With help from CSV Action Earth we want to create bird and bat boxes for both these areas which will provide safe refuges to attract wildlife. We want to make sure as many people engage with this project as possible so to that end we will be making bird and bat boxes at the Big Tent festival at the end of July. The festival is Scotland's largest eco festival and intended to attract over 8000 visitors. Visitors will be encouraged to help build the boxes and will be provided with information from existing volunteers working on these projects about the areas, the wildlife and the work that needs to be done - with the aim of encouraging them to sign up on a longer term basis to take part in conservation activities on the Estate.

Action for Aspen in Fife
Where? Fife
When? 31 May 2009
What's it about? Since the Aspen is a UK and Fife LBAP species, we have recently been liaising with the Highland Aspen Group to help us source new male plants for propagation in Fife, in order to help the species recover here (we have very few left).
As you may know, the Aspen is a very special tree species which supports a number of other species of flora and fauna through its presence, and is ideal for increasing the general biodiversity of an area. Recently, we have become involved in preparing management plans for Fife Council's major parks, an important aspect of which will be to improve their value for nature conservation. To help accomplish this, we would like to establish new stands of Aspen in each park, as well as add to the existing sites near the Lomond hills, which are among our last remaining fragments of Aspen in Fife.
The first step will be to consolidate the remaining Aspen stands at Glen Vale. We will require the full involvement of our volunteer groups from Elmwood college and the Pitcairn society to help plant and establish these new stands, under the guidance of the Fife Ranger Service.

When? 20 June 2009

An experienced willow weaver has offered their time for free but we require the materials to make this happen. The willow weaver will train the young people but it is they who will carry out the weaving, creating a hide for visitors to see the birds resting and feeding at the pond.
