Shildon 'Little Slice of Heaven' project
Where? Shildon
When? 1 June 2009
What's it about? We have a concrete yard tucked between the Community centre and the youth club. It is a sun trap but looks awful because there are no plants or greenery to break up the concrete monotony. The yard is used by the youth club during the evenings and the elderly who come every day for lunch. We can't have planters because many of the elderly have wheelchairs and they would be dangerous but we would like to buy some hanging baskets and plants and a couple of small fruit trees for the corners where they will be out of the way; to transform the yard into a beautiful place where people can sit and gather their thoughts or chat to friends. The youth club members will do the planting and be taught to manage them by the elderly people using the centre. The fruit trees will grow alongside our young people who will pass on their knowledge of how to look after them to new members. We are also going to try to get funds to buy some garden furniture and we have a bid in to the Arts Council for funds to make a piece of ironwork art for the wall of the youth club.
