Creating New Habitats for Butterflies and Moths
Where? Sherborne
When? 29 March 2008
What's it about? Alners Gorse Butterfly Reserve includes a conifer plantation put in over the last 50 years. We plan to remove these conifers over the next few years, but initially we aim to open up a wide glade to link two grassland areas which are already good habitats for threatened species like the Marsh Fritillary. We are also using the tree-trunks to create a log cabin as a field shelter for the ponies which graze the reserve. Our volunteers will be involved in cutting and processing the unwanted conifer trees and shaping suitable ones for the log cabin. We will provide soup and baked potatoes on the bonfire.
