Nurdle Nerds
Where? Wareham
When? 26 July 2009
What's it about? Nurdles are a very prevalent and problematic type of marine litter, washed down plastic making factories and being dumped overboard at sea. These plastic pellets resemble small stones, 3mm in diameter and are the raw product in the plastic industry. They float on the seas surface attracting toxins and are mistaken as fish eggs by birds and sea animals. Once ingested these animals starve and die. Nurdles can be found on every beach around the world and highlight one of man's greatest inventions, yet one of his worst. Sadly, many plastics do not biodegrade and may continue to cause impact for thousands of years, if at all. At Dorset Wildlife Trust we are keen to make people aware of this pressing issue and ask visitors the the Marine Centre at Kimmeridge to help with marine conservation by hand collecting these nurdles from the strandline. Once collected, wardens clean the nurdles and add them to our 'Nurdleometer', a tube outside the marine centre. So far, we have collected 200,000 and aim to collect 1 million.
