What's it about? Radio Tracking Barn Owls - we have 2 adult barn owls fitted with radio transmitters and are tracking them as they hunt across the countryside, trying to understand behaviour and how it links with local weather conditions (we also have a team in hungary doing the same thing) It is being carried out by a full time team of volunteers but we would like to allow more taster sessions to happen, where one off volunteers could share the experience. they would join the full time team, assist in collecting data, watch the birds through binoculars in the early evening marking their movements on a map and track with radio transmitters when the sun goes down. it will run from 18:00 until 23:00. we will offer certificates but need help in supporting them - food, maps and printed training manuals - 3 separate nights

Tidy Up Our Town - Yeo Valley Woodlands
Where? Barnstaple
When? 20 April 2009
What's it about? Barnstaple Town Council launched Tidy Up Our Town Week last year and some of our members took part in various litter picks. This year the council is encouraging more groups to get involved. We will be litter picking Cats Lane off Derby Road Barnstaple that leads to the top entrance to Yeo Valley Woodlands and the Woodlands area (@ 26 acres!). Friends of Yeo Valley Woodlands will also be helping. A local farmer has agreed to scree the lane and we will be using a fleet of wheel barrows to move bulky items down to the skip that the council hopes to provide for waste. Recyclable items will be collected in separate bags. We have chosen our date because the local secondary school has a non pupil day that day. We hope that the local primary school will also get involved - the school has worked closely with the Friends of Yeo Valley Woodlands on various forestry projects.

What's it about? Last year, Bowering Court Residents made bird boxes and replenished planters and hanging baskets. Our entry was through Devon & Cornwall Housing Association. We were joint winner of DCHA's greenest estate competition 2008. We set up a Residents Association in December. We would like to replant our hanging baskets and flower pots. This year we hope to try growing tomatoes in the hanging baskets and adding some perrenial herbs to the planters along with bedding plants. We want to show that you don't need a large garden to grow fruit and veg.

The Apple Bee Project
Where? Dartmouth
When? 20 July 2009
What's it about? We would like to put bee-hives back into the local, communal orchards. Townstal Community Partnership is a new organization working on an estate on the edge of Dartmouth facing various problems and difficulties with anti-social behavior amongst the young and the disenfranchisement of the older members. This project is geared towards both the older and younger members of the community. There are some old hives already there, but ideally we would like the funds to either make our own hives or buy some new ones. There are various courses locally for example at www.embercombe.org.uk on bee-keeping and how to make a top bar hive, which is a much more economical and versatile bee-hive that volunteers can actually make themselves. Alternatively, we can try to raise the funds to buy new hives. Various retired members of the Townstal estate will be the main bee-keepers, throughout the year. The school children at the local secondary school will also get involved in this activity. HOney production is an extremely potent symbol of a community working in harmony. Local honey is also very effective at treating allergies and will be beneficial for the local economy.

Bee Inspired!
Where? Totnes
When? 23 July 2009
What's it about? With this grant we will build a natural Bee Hive ; The overall aim of the project is to help with the conservation of bees by providing artificial habitat. Currently there are many beehives being lost due to disease and lack of suitable forage. With these natural and sustainable types of hives it is possible they may help to reduce the risk of disease through the bees having a healthier and stress free existence, and we are keen to monitor whether this is true. The initial grant will pay for the materials for the build and volunteers will assist in building the hive. There will then be an ongoing involvement from other volunteers who will be collecting regular data on temperature and humidity and varroa mite count. We are working with Philip Chandler, the local bee expert who will train the volunteers in looking after bees. it is an exciting and worthwhile project, and has been devised by volunteers and volunteers will be involved throughout.
