Impact 2009: flocking together
Where? Bakewell

What's it about? On the 14th July, all of our 960 students will have one day to complete an activity that will improve the environment – in school, around the school site, in the local community or on a global scale. Students from across the age and ability range (11-16) will be arranged into teams, each team with a task to complete that will make a physical, audible or visual impact on our environment. This grant is to enable a team of 20 students to site, build and install a collection of bird boxes that will encourage local birds back onto a site following the replacement of guttering and building work that has upset their natural breeding sites.

Public seat on multi- user path

What's it about? The wooden seat will be constructed in advance o the date and out in position on 10th june. The site choosen overlooks rolling niral countyside and will a viewing and resting place for walkers,cyclists and horse riders. BEE - ALIVE!!

What's it about? We are developing part of our school grounds through an ongoing larger project making an ECO ZONE. THe ECO committee would love to plant different plants to attract insects, bees particularly and butterflies to the school grounds.We have particularly been thinking about mini-beasts and inscets and how we can attract them. We would love to be able to purchase plants and alter areas of our school to suit particular wildlife. The teachers and parent representatives would be involved in digging, shaping and planting areas of the school.

Thistley Place Meadow Nature Reserve Biodiversity Enhancement

What's it about? Improve the area around the wheelchair accessible picnic benches by excavating and laying a firm concrete base thus providing a safer, user friendly vantage point of the Reserve from these benches for the less able bodied. To remove all guards from established shrubs which were planted nearly 18 months ago and replace with wooden stakes - this will allow air and light around the shrubs. To remove docks and other invasive perennial weeds to allow the wildflower meadow (newly sewn) to establish).

The Wild Side

What's it about? The Duke of Edinburgh Award requires our students to perform a service and over the last few years we have helped 5 care of the elderly homes and a junior school improve their environments I would like to improve our own schools environment this year. following the building of a sports facility our school now has access to a small strip of land known lovingly as the somme I would like to transform this area into a wildlife area by planting shade lovng plants and improving homes for mini beasts birds bats etc. If successful the students will use their own time to plant up the garden and erect birdtables and bee and bat boxes

Minibeast Wildlife Area

Bothered About Bees And Butterflies

What's it about? We plan to turn part of our school grounds into a bee and butterfly garden to attract more wildlife into our garden and also highlight the concerns to the school children about the deline in the bee population. We will then moniter the increase of bees and buuterflies and try to identify different species.

Medusa Makes A Home
Where? Matlock Bath
When? 13 July 2009
What's it about? To build a huge earth sculpture representing Medusa's head, planted with snake like plants for hair. The basement of the head acts as a cool summer refuge for reptiles and amphibians, which can crawl in through the ears. Bumble bees can find a first floor home as tubes amongst the hair allow access to inner chambers. Other invertebrates - such as spiders, beetles and butterflies can bask on Medusa's face and warm up in the sun.
