Green Shoots Initiative
Where? Dunblane
When? 06 July 2009
What's it about? The project is part of a wider long term programme to improve and develop the environment and biodiversity of the Dunblane Centre. The Green Shoots initiative specifically aims to increase knowledge of biodiversity through informal education events, and deliver it on site through the implementation of a series of practical workshops, activities and events. These would include: • Wildlife (inc. insect) identification sessions – followed by installation of nesting boxes, log piles etc to increase habitat range. • Planting workshops – from seed to salad. Learning about how plants grow and their relationship with the wider environment. Followed by a series of related activities like sowing, potting, nurturing, transplanting, planting for bees etc., this aims to increase biodiversity in a very hands-on fashion. The whole process will involve a full range of Dunblane Centre users, aged from 12 to 75. This includes three youth clubs (approx 50), staff members, a gardening group and other volunteers.

Water of Leith Wildflowers
Where? Leith
When? 30 July 2009
What's it about? In 2008 a team of volunteer surveyed the Water of Leith to establish a list of wildflowers growing on its banks. In the lower urban 7 miles of river we discovered 211 species of wildflower and 38 species of tree. This year we are surveying the upper 5 miles. This has established an great deal of interest in wildflower by our River Patrol volunteer who are now taking training in identifying wildplants so we can add to these lists in the future. Part of the project is to buy 4 wildflower books and keys for volunteers to use, and one butterfly book for general use at the Centre by all volunteers. The second part of the project is 2 stage. Last year volunteers collected seed from 10 species of wildflower and we hope to give these to Jupiter Wildflower Nursery to grown on for us so we can plant them back along the barer less diverse sections of river bank. We will give the seeds and have to buy back the plants to pay for their progagation. The planting will take place towards the end of July - giving time for the plants to be grown on

Planting for Wildlife at Paisley Museum
Where? Paisley
When? 29 April 2009
What's it about? In April 2008 the Renfrewshire Green Gym and Carts Greenspace helped Paisley Museum transform a small piece of neglected ground into a lovely wildlife garden. The idea was to create a site that will increase habitat value, improving the overall biodiversity of the area and providing an example to the public of how simple it is to ‘garden for wildlife’. In addition, it is hoped that in the future this resource can be linked to the natural history collections held within the museum to reinforce the conservation message. The next stage is to purchase more native wildplants to help improve the biodiversity of the site and to attract more wildlife to it. In particular we would like to purchase pond and wetland plants to improve the pond habitat by providing more shelter and hiding places for invertebrates and amphibians. On the day of the project the volunteers will be responsible for planting the new plants within the various areas of the garden, in accordance with the approved planting scheme. There will also be the opportunity for volunteers to help with general maintenance tasks within the garden, including weeding and pruning.

When? 15 June 2009
What's it about? We are an integrated project for children, aged between 4-14yrs. We are based in very old huts (50+yrs) and have no garden only a tarmac carpark which we use as our outside play area. There is no grass or plants etc. Therefore we would like to apply to yourselves for outdoor potting facilities which would consist of pots/boxes and plants to enhance our area and also give the children the opportunity to plant seeds etc and help them grow vegetables and fruit which they could then eat.

'Buzzness' is Blooming!
Where? Stirlingshire
When? 30 May 2009
What's it about? 16 members of Stirling Wildlife Watch Club aged between 9 and 13 are undertaking the discovery level of the free John Muir Award at Argaty Red Kite nature reserve with guidance from the head ranger there and the Bumblebee Conservation Trust. The work towards the award is happening between March ‘09 and October ‘09. On the 30th May the day’s focus will be upon the conservation project to manage and enhance the new bumblebee garden at Argaty. This is in order to encourage the 6 common bumblebee species to populate the area. Previously the group has researched bees so as to be familiar with the different types and the key plant species suitable for attracting them. The day itself will incorporate landscaping of the garden, planting of flowers and saplings, the removal of invasive species and general tidying of the area. Following the conservation work the group will have a session exploring the reserve, undertaking surveys of birds, mammals, plants and indeed bumblebees - to see if their efforts have been fruitful. The group will present all of their discoveries and conservation work to an invited audience at the award’s end. They will use art work, photography, poetry, songs and posters to convey their message.
